frequently asked questions

A registered dietitian (RD) is a regulated health professional specializing in food and nutrition. They are recognized experts in evaluating scientific and nutrition-related research and translating this into actionable plans for individuals and families. RDs are regulated by provincial colleges and have high standards to achieve accreditation. ‘Dietitian’ is a protected title across Canada, similar to a physician or a nurse.  They have a broad scope of practice, often working with children and adults in hospitals, medical clinics and in private practice settings.

Nutritionists have a protected designation in some provinces (AB, QC and NS) but there are many who market themselves as a nutritionist without professional training and don’t require certification. The education or experience of a nutritionist varies and their practice may encompass nutrition advice outside the realm of medical and scientific evidence. Nutritionists can be helpful however for individuals looking for general advice on healthy eating habits. Using an RD is one way to ensure the information and advice you’re seeking is sound.

RDs have substantial food and nutrition training. This includes a 4-year university degree program, a subsequent dietetic internship and supervised clinical placements. RDs must also successfully complete the Canadian Dietetic Registration Examination prior to achieving formal registration as an RD with their respective provincial college.

RDs can help you by evaluating your individual food and nutritional goals and apply their training and expertise to customize a plan that suits your needs. This is done in a food-focused way using best available scientific literature to ensure you’re staying healthy along your journey.

If you or someone in your family are struggling with nutrition related problems, it’s appropriate to seek out the help of a registered dietitian. Be that the management of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, weight loss or infant feeding concerns, we’re here to help! An RD will often recommend a follow up frequency after your initial consultation depending on your individual health concerns and needs.

Goal setting is often a tough task for many people. Start by writing down simple wishes or concerns about yourself or your family you’d like to address. Registered dietitians can help you link a nutrition plan to your concerns and put you on a path to a healthier you!

Absolutely. Registered dietitians are bound by their regulatory colleges to maintain a professional and confidential approach to your nutrition needs. Their recommendations can be sent to your family physician or health provider upon your request.
